Shirley Lou Bruhn Lindsay

Shirley Lou Bruhn Lindsay, 88, of Lake Forest, Illinois, passed away on April 25, 2023.  She was born on November 26, 1934, in Pierre, South Dakota, the daughter of Louis and Mabel (Gilliland) Bruhn.  Shirley was raised in Valley City, North Dakota.  She graduated from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota, and pursued her advanced education at the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, where she met her husband, Clarence Lindsay.  While living in Evanston, Shirley and Cal were very active in the square dance community.

Shirley held a special place in her heart for Hawaii where she lived and worked for a short time.  But once Shirley came to Lake Forest, she found her home and sense of community.  Shirley was actively involved in P.E.O., an international philanthropic organization which supports education for women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College.  Shirley played a large part in founding the local chapter MQ, where she served as President for three terms.  Shirley was an accomplished pianist.  She was such a creative individual and loved to paint, journal and seek and share the meaning of life.  Even when separated by long distances, Shirley kept a connection with family and friends.

Survivors include her niece, Tami (Mike) Nelson, Idaho; nephews, Sam (Wendy) Bruhn, Idaho, and Tony Bruhn, Arizona, as well as a very special long-time friend and spiritual soul mate, Brian Peterson.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, Dave, and nephew, Monte.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, located at 400 East Westminster Road, Lake Forest, IL  60045.  (847-234-7633; www.chsif.org)
