Mary Lannan Obituary

Mary Veronica Lannan, 75, of Franklin, IN passed away January 2, 2020, at Aspen Trace in Greenwood, IN. She was born September 25, 1944, in Madison, WI to the late Henry and Phyllis (Erickson) Sommers.

Mary is survived by her loving husband, Ronald; two sons, Cullen Peters and Ben (Susie) Peters; two step-sons, Ryan (Susy) Lannan and Jarrod (Weijun) Lannan; mother-in-law, Norma Lannan; two brothers, Tim (Barb) Sommers and Tommy (Gretchen) Sommers; sister, Peggy (Jim) Fischer; brother-in-law, Alan Lindberg; six grandchildren, Everett Peters and Elise Peters, Rhys Lannan, Sydney Lannan, Mackenkie Lannan, Evan Lannan; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by one brother, John Sommers; and two sisters, Kathy Lindberg and Sharon Bach-Hartman; and father-in-law, Donald Lannan.

In 1963, Mary graduated from Messmer H.S. in Milwaukee, WI. This was where she met and later wed her first husband and high school sweet-heart, James Peters in January of 1967. After initially settling in Wauwatosa WI, Mary worked a variety of administrative and volunteer jobs, between having children and also staying at home to perform super mom duties. Life would eventually lead all over the midwest from Milwaukee to Greenwood IN (1979), Greenwood IN to Rockford IL (1987), Rockford IL to Louisville KY (1990), and then Louisville KY to Columbus, IN (1992). Along the way, Mary’s infectious spirit and friendliness won over a multitude of life-long friends, including her second husband Ron Lannan to whom she was married in the spring of 2000. Mary worked for Cummins, Inc. from 1992-1999, and then as an office manager at the Indiana State Court of Appeals from 1999-2006. After her retirement in 2006, Mary volunteered for over five years at the Johnson Memorial Hospital Cancer Center in Franklin, IN.

Mary loved the glitz and glamour of dressing up for events, traveling, hosting card nights, baking spritz cookies during the holidays, tv soap operas, a fine wine, cooking for everyone, her cats Buddy and then Baker, her chair-side chocolates, and most of all her family.

Tremendous and heartfelt thanks must go out to the staff at Aspen Trace Senior Living facilities in Greenwood, IN who provided much more than nursing care for Mary, but also provided a peaceful and compassionate environment as she battled her brain disease and transitioned to the afterlife.
