Mary Kolar Mathews

Mary Kolar Mathews, 93, a longtime resident of Gurnee, passed away peacefully at home on April 11, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Born January 5, 1930, in Antigo, WI to the late Joseph and Emma Ano (nee Steber).

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children Joseph T. Kolar, who passed away in July 1982, her second husband Joseph Mathews who passed away in January 2009, and her four brothers and two sisters.

Mary was a loving mother to Nancy Kolar (the late Art) Creaney, Tom (Donna) Kolar, Dan (Linda) Kolar, and Joe Kolar; beloved grandmother to Greg (Pam) Powroznik, AmyLynn Creaney, Mark (Heather) Kolar, Mike (Kristan) Kolar, Brenna Kolar, Kevin Kolar, Theresa (the late Brent) Oakes, Tracy (Ben) Scholl, and Valerie Nerini; dear great-grandmother to Jake, John and Emily Kolar, Aidan and Andrew Scholl, and Leo Oakes. Mary will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mary was an avid golfer, bowler, bridge player, enjoyed snow skiing and was a longtime member of the Lake County Home Extension. Mary’s kindness and generosity will never be forgotten.

The family would like to thank her dear friend Joan Dodich for all the love she showed our mom.

Visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 pm, with a celebration of life service at 6:00 pm, on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Gurnee Community Church, 4555 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee, IL with Rev. Brian Walter officiating. A private family burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park in Libertyville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gurnee Community Church or online at www.gcchome.org.
