Karen Gergel Obituary

Karen Irene Gergel, 66, of Beach Park, passed away February 24, 2022, in Waukegan. She was born October 22, 1955, in Sayre, PA to the late Bruce and Eugenia (Staniukinas) McNamara. Karen worked and retired as the Retail Operations Manager for the Great Lakes Navy Exchange. She was also the foster coordinator for Fat Cat Rescue, Inc., as well as a board member for many years. Karen is survived by her children, Kevin (Dana) Gergel and Michelle (Stephen Thompson) Maturo; dear friend, Evelyn Clintsman; friend and father of her children, Michael Gergel; grandchildren, Kayla Burns, Lexi Gergel, Michael Maturo, Matthew Maturo, and Stephen "Trey" Thompson III; sister, Denise (Kenneth Shipman) Bergman; brothers, Patrick (Michelle) McNamara and Daniel McNamara; brother-in-law, Ed Wrightson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her sister, Colleen Wrightson; and sister-in-law, Suzanne Westbrook.  A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, March 19th, 2022, from 1:30pm to 4:30pm, at Pepe's Mexican Restaurant, 760 N. Green Bay Rd., Waukegan, IL. Come out and honor Karen's memory by enjoying some food and refreshments, cash bar available.
