JoAnn Yamamoto Obituary

JoAnn Yamamoto

January 30, 1953 – April 15, 2025

JoAnn Yamamoto, 72, of Gurnee, Illinois, passed away tragically on April 15, 2025, in a house fire at her home. Her passing leaves behind a legacy of compassion, intellect, and quiet strength that touched countless lives both personally and professionally.

JoAnn was known for her kind and generous heart. She had a unique ability to make people feel truly seen and heard, always willing to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Despite her gentle nature, she had an unexpected and enthusiastic love for horror movies. Whether venturing out alone to a matinee or joining friends for a weekend screening, her love of film—and especially the scary ones—was a joyful part of her life.

JoAnn had a creative spirit that flourished in recent years. She took up beading and crafted intricate jewelry pieces, including a stunning crystal-beaded Christmas tree she proudly shared with friends. She also embraced knitting and crocheting, always eager to create and give. Her home was a place of warmth, creativity, and the joyful energy of her beloved dogs.

A devoted dog lover, JoAnn adopted several rescue Collies over the years—Violet, Velvet, Ebony, Murphy, and Wrigley—each of whom held a special place in her heart. She found peace and happiness in their companionship, often taking them to local dog parks and cherishing every moment spent together.

Professionally, JoAnn was an accomplished Senior Quality Professional in the life sciences industry, specializing in medical devices and biologics. Her expertise in process and test method validation, statistical data analysis, and regulatory compliance earned her the respect of her peers. She held multiple certifications from the American Society for Quality, including Certified Quality Engineer, Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, Certified Quality Auditor, and Certified Six Sigma Green Belt. Her career included impactful roles at Abbott Diagnostics, Hospira, DuPont Critical Care, and as a consultant with EmpiriQA.

JoAnn earned her Ph.D. in Bioorganic and Biophysical Chemistry from the University of Minnesota and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Michigan Molecular Institute. She began her academic journey with an Honors B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

JoAnn’s life was guided by a sense of curiosity, integrity, and a deep care for others—human and animal alike. She will be remembered not only for her professional achievements but for her warmth, humility, and the joy she brought to those around her.

She is deeply missed by her friends, former colleagues, and all whose lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, her family and friends suggest a donation to the Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue. https://www.mwcr.org
