Jack Russell Sweeney “Russ”, 86, of Grayslake, IL formerly of Mundelein, IL, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on October 20, 1935, in Chicago, IL to the late Jack Thompson and Sylvia (Russell) Sweeney. On April 27, 1957, in Highwood, IL, Russ married the love of his life, Della Rose (Margelli) Sweeney.
Russ was an avid swimmer, baseball fan, outdoorsman, and patriot. He enjoyed traveling, history, and spending time with his grandchildren. Russ was organized, handy, and meticulous, continually improving his home and property up north.
He is survived by his loving family, three sons, Michael Sweeney, Thomas (Carrie) Sweeney, and Christopher (Laura) Sweeney; one daughter, Mary Beth (Jim) Archer; ten grandchildren, Meagan, Allison, Erin, Matthew, Ryan, Michelle, Peter, Madelyn, Audrey, and James; and one great granddaughter, Remi Jo Irsay. In addition to his parents, Russ was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Della Rose Sweeney; and his son, David Sweeney. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022 at 11am, with visitation from 10am-11am, at St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 22333 W. Erhart Rd., Mundelein, IL with Rev. Fr. Don Cambe officiating. Burial will be private at Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Libertyville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bright Focus Foundation Macular Degeneration Research at www.brightfocus.org/support.
