Betty Mae Svehla, 83, of Waukegan passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 28, 1939. On August 9, 1958 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waukegan, IL, Betty married the love of her life, James “Jim” Svehla. She was devoted to her family, steadfast in friendship, and dedicated in faith. Betty always had a way of making one feel as though they were the most important person in the room. She enjoyed many camping trips with her family, and she and Jim spend their retirement years traveling in their motorhome. One of her biggest joys was her grandchildren. Nanny was known for her ever abounding snack drawer and for her love of Christmas. Nanny made every day special and every holiday even more memorable. Betty is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Jim Svehla; three children, Jim (Cindy) Svehla, Sandy (Ken) Nommensen and Mike (Michelle) Svehla; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Sabrina) Svehla, Becky (RJ) Hallebach, Nick (Jess) Svehla, Kevin Svehla, Nathan Nommensen, Stephanie Nommensen, Emily Svehla, and Maggie Svehla; three brothers, Ray (Linda) Tistle, Jerry (Darlene) Tistle, and Ronnie (Jill) Riley and several nieces and nephews. Near and dear to “Miss Betty” and her family are her amazing care givers, Marla Diamond, Glenda Guerra, Connie Cardenas, Randi McCuen, and Frances Henderson. She felt their love and support daily, a true gift from God. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret (Moeller) and Joseph Riley, and brother, Tommy Riley. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, from noon-1 pm, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1310 N. Frolic Avenue, Waukegan. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 1 pm at the church with Rev. Stephen Radunzel officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be private at Millburn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Arrangements entrusted to Sambrano Funeral & Cremation, Gurnee.
