Angelo "Evangelos" G. Vassos, 84, of Gurnee, formerly of Lyons, IL, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2021, at home with his family. He was born on December 15, 1936, in Greece to the late Konstantinos and Kasiane (Karountzou) Vasilopoulos.
As we look back to celebrate and honor all of Angelo’s accomplishments over the past 84 years, we remember a great, loving husband to Vicky, father to Gus and Kathy, grandfather to Vasi, Andrew, and Christine, and great grandfather to Layla and Tommy. Angelo and Vicky got married July 11, 1957- 65 years of marriage. He went to college and worked hard. He owned a grocery store and opened up a restaurant where he worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the love for cooking and food with others.
Angelo had many talents. Besides being self employed and hard working, he loved Greek music and dancing, loved sports and enjoyed the camaraderie with friends and family.
Angelo and his son, Gus spent lots of time playing golf together and spending quality time on the course. Angelo always wanted his daughter, Kathy to have the absolute best and he was always very proud of her. She will always remember his love, that special smile, that caring heart and his warm embrace he gave to all of us. We will all miss his thoughtful advice, listening ear, and of course his daily check-in calls. He always said "do your best, my lovely daughter."
Angelo always said one of the best decisions he made was to come live with his daughter and Demetri. Making this move made it easier to see the grandkids and spend that quality time with family all summer long. His great granddaughter, Layla spent her summer weekends at the house and loved to help take care of her papou. She’d bring him water, his cigars, whatever he needed. Angelo had a way with words and always spoke his words of wisdom upon others. He was a smart man and wanted to implement life lessons that you could carry with you.
Goodbyes are never easy, but Angelo had so many happy memories and successes in life that will be cherished and honored by his loved ones.
He was a wonderful father to his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and loving husband to Vasiliki. His family was his greatest legacy.
Angelo is survived by his loving wife, Vicky "Vasiliki" Vassos; two children, Katherine (Demetri) Hernandez and Gus (Sharon) Vassos; three grandchildren, Vasi (Joe) Quirk, Christine Vassos, and Andrew Hernandez; two great grandchildren, Layla Quirk and Tommy Quirk; one brother, Panayioti (Irini) Vasilopoulos, two sisters, Niki (Panayioti) Neofotistos and Christina Michael; one sister-in-law, Tasia Vasilopoulos; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Angelo was preceded in death by one brother, Eleftherios Vasilopoulos; and one brother-in-law, Grigori Michael. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, from 10am-11am, with a funeral service at 11am, at Ascension of Our Lord Greek Orthodox Church, 1207 Riverwoods Rd., Lincolnshire, IL with Fr.
