Patricia Julia Martin, age 89, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2018 at the Pepper Family Hospice Care Center in Barrington, IL. She was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on May 23, 1929 to Robert Leo and Bernice Margurite (Thomas) Bailey. At age 18 she took a train across the country to San Diego, CA to attend Mercy College School of Nursing and upon graduation worked as an RN at Mercy Hospital. It was there that she met a young sailor, Douglas Monte Martin. They were married in San Diego, CA, on October 28, 1950. Deeply devoted to each other, Pat and Doug’s loving relationship still inspires all who knew them. Together they had nine children. Because of her husband’s Naval career, the family moved regularly and lived in California, Virginia, Hawaii, Maryland and Illinois. Pat used to joke that as soon as she hung curtains it was time to move again. Determined and resourceful, Pat often cared for her children alone while Doug was on multiple tours of duty. As her children grew, she found more time for the things that she enjoyed. She spent many years volunteering for the Red Cross and teaching Confraternity of Christian Doctrine in the Catholic church. Pat loved growing African violets, crocheting rugs, cooking, doing puzzles, reading harlequin romance novels, and most of all, family gatherings. She had many difficulties in her life, but tackled each one with courage, optimism and a contagious sense of humor. Always concerned for the needs of others before her own, Pat was compassionate and selfless, and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She leaves behind four daughters: Patricia Killoran, Debra (Martin) LaVoy, Doris (Lawrence) LeStarge, and Pamela (John) Burke; three sons: Drew Martin, Drake (Sabrina) Martin, and Douglas (Anne) Martin; one sister: Nancy (James) Rohloff; one brother: Robert Bailey; twenty-six grandchildren and thirty-three great-grandchildren. Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband; infant daughter, Penny Martin; son, Paul Martin; and sister, Delores Walke. Mass will take place on Thursday, June 28th at 10:30am with visitation from 9:30am-10:30am at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 410 N. 1st St., Cary, IL with Fr. Timothy Siegel officiating. Burial will be held on Thursday, June 28th at 2:00 at Fort Sheridan Cemetery, Vattner Road, Fort Sheridan, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Patricia’s family, in care of her son, Drake Martin. The family will make a donation to a charity of their choice. Arrangements entrusted to Sambrano Funeral & Cremation, 4606 Old Grand Ave., Gurnee, IL.
